Transformer Pre-Energization Inspection: Nameplate, Wiring, Oil Level, Protection, Cooling and Mechanical Condition

Confirm that this transformer matches this system
Check equipment identity, rated capacity, primary and secondary voltage, phases, frequency, vector group or connection, tap position and cooling method. The purpose is not transcription. It is to verify that the approved drawings, nameplate, one-line and actual site connection refer to the same design state.
Recheck oil, sealing and mechanical condition
Inspect visible leakage, oil-level or related indicators, valves, accessories and mechanical supports. Confirm that temporary transport or installation protections have been restored to the correct operating condition. Abnormalities should be closed before energization rather than treated as something to “watch after switch-on.”
Protection, temperature monitoring and cooling must actually function
Protection devices should have the project-required testing and settings complete. Temperature, oil-level, alarm/trip and cooling-control signals should be consistent from field devices through terminals and the supervisory system. An energized panel does not prove that trip logic, remote indication or cooling-start logic has been functionally verified.
The final pre-energization step is responsibility and closure
The checklist needs a clear completion state, documented outstanding items and an identified release authority. Items accepted for post-energization closure should still be recorded with responsibility and timing; they should not survive only as verbal memory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can a transformer with a correct nameplate still be unready for energization?
Because the nameplate proves rated information, not that field wiring, grounding, protection, accessories, oil system, cooling and control logic were installed and verified correctly.
Must every minor punch-list item be closed before energization?
Use the project procedure to classify items. Anything affecting safety, insulation, protection, connection or equipment integrity should be closed before energization. Other accepted items still need documented responsibility and closure timing.
Can the factory inspection sheet replace the site pre-energization check?
No. Factory inspection and post-installation site condition are different states. Site installation, connection and handover tests require their own confirmation.
