Why internal pressure can rise

An internal arc, rapid heating or decomposition of oil and insulation can produce a fast pressure increase. The relief device responds to pressure conditions at its location and setting. Operation alone does not identify the fault position or mechanism.

Contacts and discharge direction

The device may provide an operation indicator and an electrical contact for signaling. Whether that contact is used only for alarm or enters another logic should follow the project protection philosophy. The discharge path should be directed away from cable trenches, buswork, walkways and adjacent equipment; ducts or shields may be required by the arrangement.

What to examine after operation

Follow site safety and isolation procedures. Preserve the device position and visible evidence. Inspect oil traces, leakage, seals, oil level, the Buchholz relay, protection records and DGA. Determine why pressure developed before deciding on repair, reset or return to service.

Calibration and sealing tests

The PRD should be calibrated at the stages required by the applicable project or maintenance rules, with the result compared with its nameplate or manufacturer requirements. Tank sealing tests should verify leakage without applying a condition that unintentionally operates the relief device. Test pressure and duration must come from the approved document.

PRD and Buchholz are different

The Buchholz relay observes gas accumulation and oil movement in the connecting pipe. The PRD responds to tank pressure. The two devices may operate during the same event, or only one may operate. Their indications should be placed on the same event timeline with electrical protection and inspection evidence.

Design review boundary

Device selection, quantity, contact duty, discharge routing and reset procedure are project-specific and require manufacturer and owner approval.

Frequently asked questions

Does PRD operation mean the fault is cleared?

No. Pressure has been relieved, but the initiating condition still requires investigation.

Can a PRD replace a Buchholz relay?

No. They respond to different physical conditions and provide different evidence.
