The moment the missing scope appeared

A night-shift control room received a Buchholz gas alarm. Someone suggested that recent oil work had probably left air in the system and that the alarm could be reset. The supervisor stopped the shortcut and first preserved the time, load, oil temperature, oil level, cooling status and other protection indications.

Why the shortcut was dangerous

A gas alarm can relate to internal gas generation, residual air, leakage, oil level or oil movement. Because several explanations are possible, the signal cannot be dismissed as “false” without evidence. Resetting clears the indication but not the cause—and may erase the earliest clue.

What the engineering evidence says

The relay, gas observations, DGA, external inspection and electrical protection must be placed on one timeline. A single color, smell or preliminary gas result should not be used as the final diagnosis.

How TransformerGrid structures the review

For new equipment, TransformerGrid makes the relay application, orientation, valves, alarm/trip contacts, terminal numbers, circuit tests, calibration evidence and spare requirements explicit before FAT.

Information to send before quotation

  • Relay and pipe arrangement
  • Alarm/trip duty
  • Valve and sampling access
  • Terminal and cable schedule
  • Calibration and circuit test records
