Manufacturer A hands you an extract from their last 12 months of export records: 99 documented orders to 26 countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia — including units up to 336 MVA at 230 kV, with 60 Hz deliveries to the United States, Canada, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru, the Philippines, and South Korea. Manufacturer B hands you 3 units — all shipped to a neighboring country, all under 1 MVA, no documented record, no table, no dates.

Export experience is not a decorative number in a catalog. It's the hardest piece of evidence that this factory can deliver what they promised, to your market, under your conditions. Building a transformer for a local utility is one thing. Building one for a desert at 50°C or a 60 Hz grid at 3,000 meters — and then shipping it across an ocean — is something else entirely.


What Export Data Should Tell You

Read export data through five lenses. Don't get distracted by vague sentences.

1. Country Names, Not Region Names

"We export to North America" is useless. The right answer is: "United States — 336 MVA, 230/115/34.5 kV auto-transformer, 60 Hz. Canada — 15.6 MVA, 115/24.94 kV. Ecuador — 130 MVA, 69/11 kV, 60 Hz."

Every national grid has different nominal voltages, different frequency, different interconnection standards. A factory that has shipped to the United States has already navigated UL compliance, IEEE testing protocols, and NEMA enclosure requirements. "We've exported to the region" without country names means they probably haven't exported to any.

2. Capacity and Voltage, Not Just Count

Shipping fifty 50 kVA pole-mounted units is not the same as shipping one 50 MVA substation transformer. Demand a breakdown by product type:

3. Frequency: 50 Hz Is Not 60 Hz

North American systems operate at 60 Hz, and frequency-dependent results must be evaluated for the rated frequency. Ask which tests are performed at 60 Hz, whether the governing standard permits any conversion method, and which qualified facility performs tests that the factory cannot complete in-house.

A factory with KEMA verification at 250 MVA, 345 kV, 60 Hz has already proven it. They don't need to tell you — the independent laboratory already did.

4. Real Operating Voltages, Not Catalog Voltages

Not all 13.8 kV is the same. The US distribution system uses 12.47 kV, 13.2 kV, 13.8 kV, 24.94 kV, and 34.5 kV — depending on the utility. A manufacturer that has delivered to multiple US utilities knows that the difference isn't just a number on a nameplate. It affects turns ratio, tap range, and protection settings.

What Matters

  1. Experience in conditions similar to yours — if your grid is 60 Hz IEEE, prior 60 Hz deliveries to the US and Canada mean the learning curve is short
  2. Capacity to obtain local certifications — a serious manufacturer says: "We don't hold that specific certification today, but here's our plan and timeline"
  3. Volume from the most recent year — more revealing than "20 years of experience." A factory with 99 orders in 12 months is actively exporting. One with "20 years of history" and 3 orders last year is in survival mode

Export experience is measured in data, not in years. A manufacturer with 18 years of operation and more than 60 countries of cumulative reach should be able to show you at least the last 12 months in technical detail: model, capacity, voltage, country. If they can't — or won't — it's not a lack of time. It's a lack of data.

And if your country doesn't appear in those recent records, the right question isn't "why not?" — it's "what's your plan?" A serious manufacturer already has that answer prepared.
