A site screenshot showing 60 dB does not automatically disprove a standards-based factory report. A passed factory report does not automatically prove that a hotel room or property boundary will be quiet. The two observations may describe different quantities under different conditions.

Four comparisons that regularly fail

Sound pressure vs sound power

Sound pressure is measured at a position and changes with distance, reflections and background. Sound power represents the source’s overall radiation and is determined through a specified measurement and correction procedure. Both use decibels, but they are not interchangeable.

Different distances

For a point source in an ideal free field, doubling distance is often approximated as a 6 dB reduction. A transformer is not an ideal point source, especially in the near field or beside reflecting surfaces. Use that relationship to understand propagation—not to replace the governing measurement standard.

Different backgrounds and reflections

A busy factory can mask the source; a quiet site can make the same tonal component prominent. Walls, roofs, vehicles and hard ground alter the local sound field.

Different operating conditions

No-load core sound, load-related electromagnetic forces, harmonics and cooling equipment do not contribute in the same way. Voltage, frequency, tap position, load and cooling state belong beside every result.
