Your Nameplates Add Up to 300 kW. Why We Still Won’t Quote 375 kVA Yet

Three hundred kilowatts of nameplates

A new facility adds every equipment nameplate together and gets 300 kW. The buyer has already done some homework and asks, “Can we just quote 375 kVA and move on?”

If every load truly runs at full output at the same time, the decision path may be straightforward. Real plants, hotels, commercial buildings, pumping stations, warehouses, and campuses rarely operate that neatly.

Installed load is not automatically operating demand

Connected load tells you how much equipment exists. Sizing requires you to understand what reasonably coincides: how much runs together, for how long, at what power factor, with what starting behavior, and with what future additions.

Ten 30 kW nameplates do not prove that the transformer sees 300 kW every minute.

But “they never run together” is not a sizing method either

The opposite shortcut can be just as risky. Production schedules change. Control logic changes. Seasonal loads overlap. Expansion turns yesterday’s “never simultaneous” equipment into tomorrow’s combined peak. A smaller transformer chosen only because “we normally do not run everything at once” can become the bottleneck when operations change.

The most valuable sheet before the quotation

  • equipment name
  • quantity
  • unit kW or kVA
  • power factor
  • continuous or intermittent duty
  • simultaneous operation
  • starting impact
  • future expansion

Why this makes supplier quotations more comparable

If the front-end load conditions are unclear, Supplier A may assume conservative demand, Supplier B may use the connected total, and Supplier C may silently apply a diversity assumption. The three prices look comparable while the underlying specifications are different.

Send the load list before you send only the kVA

For a new factory, workshop, hotel, commercial building, mine, pumping station, or expansion, the load list is usually more valuable than a one-line “please quote 500 kVA.”
